Should I Hire Staff Before They Get Certified?

QUESTION:

“Does anyone hire staff before they get certified, then train them?”

Answer 1:

Yes, I do all pre-hiring work, they pay for their cert, and then once they pass I submit the paperwork. They can get part of their training fee back if they work the full summer because we are seasonal but they pay upfront

Answer 2:

I always hired them conditionally based on successfully completing training.

Answer 3:

We hire and certify our own staff, and pay for their entire training. These certifications are only valid at our facility unless we sign off for a guard to use elsewhere. If they can't pass, we might offer them a non-certified position.

Answer 4:

Yes. This is exactly what we do. We interview them and do an in water test to make sure they can complete the fitness requirement of the LG class. They do all the HR paperwork, background test, and drug test, and if all that is good we enroll them in a class for just the ARC fee. It’s a lengthy process so they are relatively invested even before they take the class. Sure, we have had a couple here and there that didn’t end up working for us but overall, this has helped our staffing tremendously. Actually, we haven’t had any issues with staffing since we took this approach.

Answer 5:

Hired them and then had them pay for the training upfront, but reimbursed 100% of the cost after they work X number of hours for us.
