How Do You Handle Your Pool Slide Rules With Height?

QUESTION:

“We have a slide and manufacturer has 48" min. height and they should be able to swim.

We have kids who can swim that are not 48". Currently we try to enforce "Under 48" you must ride on a lap of someone 15 or older, which is also on the manufacturer sign.

We constantly have parents upset because, "their kid can swim" and at some point, they went down alone and were fine.

How do you handle your slide rules with height?”

Answer 1:

I would stick to the manufacturer’s specifications. If you go outside of that get and end up in a lawsuit you won’t have much to stand on.

Answer 2:

We are strict, they HAVE to meet the height requirement. If they are knowingly under the height requirement and get hurt on the slide, the liability falls on us since we didn’t follow the manufacturer’s guidelines.

Answer 3:

In most states, the ride manufacturer ride recommendations are used as a matter of state law. I always tell parents that it’s beyond my pay grade, speak to their legislators. I’m polite but serious.

Answer 4:

Personally I say “I understand your frustrations with your child and I’m glad to know they are able to swim, but due to this being a public pool with other children of the same height as your child we can not allow just your child down by themselves and force the other children to sit in an adults lap. Thank you for helping keep everyone safe.”
